Little Dragon Crochet Pattern

I made this crochet dragon pattern for the same reason why I made the dinosaur crochet pattern a few months ago.
My sisters recently finished the Wings of Fire series, and as such, they wanted crochet dragons for their desk. The issue is, most of the crochet dragon patterns out there are either humongous and somewhat complicated, or so ridiculously simple that they look like they just jumped out of a baby book. I wanted something that was simple and fast to crochet, while still looking like a ferociously adorable little dragon.
And so: introducing the little dragon crochet pattern! 🐉
This pattern was an absolute joy to create. I currently have them perched all over my desk – there’s even a sparkly blue one on the TV! Since there are quite a few different dragon descriptions out there, I decided to include a plethora of variations within the pattern. You can add anywhere between 1-6 horns, several different kinds of eye ridges, back spikes, chest ornamentations, frills, and more besides.
Little Dragon Crochet Pattern Info
This pattern is designed for confident beginners and up. As mentioned above, I wanted it to be easier to make than many other dragon crochet patterns available. The wings are the only area in which we stray from standard amigurumi techniques, but if you’re new, don’t feel daunted! There are quite a few helpful charts and an abundance of photos to help with any of the more tricky steps.
The pattern is only in English at this time, in US terminology.
Depending on your tension, the finished dragon is about 10 inches long from tail to nose, 4 inches tall from toe to head, and about 16 inches wide if the wings are spread. Gauge is not crucial in this pattern, so long as the stitches are uniform and do not allow stuffing to be visible through the holes.
I definitely recommend using wire/pipe cleaner for the wings, and you may wish to use wire in the legs (though both are totally optional!). We’ll talk more about the wire in a bit.
It’s my largest pattern to date, spanning 57 pages! Technically, the latter portion of those pages contain a duplicate printer-friendly version with less images (perfect for saving ink). The main pattern includes a plethora of images, charts, and tips to help every step of the way – it’s the main reason why the pattern is so long!
Supplies for Making a Crochet Dragon
🐉 YARN: In any size and in any gauge – just make sure you size your hook accordingly! All the dragons in the images are made with medium weight yarn. Larger yarn would create a larger dragon , and smaller yarn would result in a smaller dragon. One of my testers created a dragon with chunky yarn; it was adorable!
I recommend using at least two colors (one for the body, and one for the wings + any other optional details), but I definitely encourage using more colors. Feel free to be creative! I typically purchase all my yarn at Hobby Lobby and Amazon.
Using worsted medium weight yarn, you will need an approximate minimum of 151 yards/278 grams, not counting any extra optional details you may wish to make.
BODY: 21 yards
LEGS: 24 yards
HEAD: 8 yards
WINGS: 98 yards (60 yards in Color 1, 38 in Color 2)
+ Extra yards for any optional details.
🐉 CROCHET HOOK: For medium weight yarn, I scale down on the recommended hook size by quite a bit, and use either my F (3.75mm) or G (4.00mm) crochet hook. I’m currently using these inexpensive crochet hooks (Amazon); for more info, you can read all about my favorite crochet hooks in this post.
🐉 TAPESTRY NEEDLE: Used for sewing the crochet dragon together and weaving in ends. My favorite ever were these Clover needles (Amazon) (I was shocked when I discovered they made needles too!). I lost them both years ago, and only recently found one of them again – eureka! It’s battered and a little bent, but it’s still by far my favorite needle.
SAFETY EYES: I used 8-12mm safety eyes for this dragon from a variety pack similar to this. Choose a size that looks appropriate to you. You could also embroider eyes if you prefer.
🐉 WIRE (optional): For the wings, you’ll need two 18”-20” lengths of 12-18g wire – err on the side of larger wire if you can get it! I used repurposed electric wire, but you can cut up a wire clothes hanger, or buy paper-wrapped wire on amazon or from the faux flower bouquet aisle in craft stores. If you also wish to add wire to the legs, you’ll need four 4” lengths of 14-24g wire – you can get away with using smaller size wire for the legs, or just use the same wing wire.
🐉 POLYFIL: I purchased this big ol’ 20 pound box of polyfil (Amazon) for a really great price, and I’m pretty sure I’ll never run out of stuffing again.

As I did a dinosaur fun fact in my crochet raptor pattern, I thought I’d do a dragon fun fact too:
Though it’s all really just silly semantics, the word “dragon”, according to fantasy critics, generally indicate a creature with 4 legs AND 2 wings. A “wyvern”, on the other hand, has 2 legs and 2 wings. Which means that technically, Smaug from the movies, the dragons from Skyrim, and many other so-called ‘dragons’ from various sources are actually considered wyverns.
Of course, as I mentioned above, dragons and wyverns are fantasy nowadays anyway, so any definitions we apply are simply for fun and games.
